Wonky House becomes iconic Airbnb

One of Lincoln’s most recognisable historic buildings has been given a new lease of life, with visitors now able to stay inside the city’s famous ‘Wonky House’.

Following a £570,000 restoration project, combining a £350,000 grant from the Architectural Heritage Fund, a £110,000 grant from Historic England and an £86,000 contribution from the City of Lincoln Council; the property has been brought up to modern standards and is now available as holiday accommodation.

The 16th century, Grade II listed building is one of Lincoln's most distinctive and most photographed buildings, having been saved from demolition in the 1930s. But it was again under threat due to substantive works required on its precarious position on the steep slope of Michaelgate.

The property was previously let as a holiday home by the National Trust before being returned to two separate dwellings as part of the latest restoration project. No. 40, the Wonky House, is now available to book, with No. 42 set to follow once its restoration and furnishing are complete.

The comprehensive programme of works has helped secure the future of both historic properties, with particular attention given to the timber frame of No. 40. Historic timber was found to be severely damaged by death watch beetle, which had been hidden behind modern cementitious panels.

Heritage Lincolnshire will manage the two holiday lets, with income from the accommodation helping to support the charity’s work to preserve Lincolnshire’s historic buildings.

Tracy Stringfellow, Chief Executive Officer, Heritage Lincolnshire, said:

“The Wonky House is a fantastic example of what we can achieve from true partnership working, and we are grateful to the people of Lincoln, and to the City of Lincoln Council who continue to work closely with us to protect great heritage in the city. We're excited others will be able to experience this beautiful building right in the heart of historic Lincoln.”
